- forgot to mention that nofap forums can be a double-edged sword. They can make one overly focused on the habits he is trying to escape, which is detrimental. They’re good for occasional support, advice, or motivation. In general try not to think too much about what you are undertaking, just live life and don’t have the concept of masturbation on your mind. Don’t even think about not thinking about it. It’s important to be occupied, not much free time, don’t feel bored and full of energy when you are home. If you think you will relapse, do anything to distract yourself, take a walk, turn on the TV \n\n A good idea is to set your computer to use a family friendly DNS. Obviously if you wanted to you could get around it, but since it’s much harder to, your conscious will probably kick in beforehand. Also avoid looking at provocative content and using sites that are likely to contain it. But don’t become scared of that content because then you will be over sensitized and vulnerable \n\n Spending a lot of time on the internet seems to make breaking this habit difficult. It’s probably due to a combination of the things mentioned above: too much free time, boredom, exposure to mildly provocative content (even pictures of cute girls can have an impact on you after repeated exposure). But like I said, don’t become scared.
- If you are a true internet addict, find things to do to occupy your time. Part time job, some kind of class, etc \n\n If you are successful for long enough you will lose the urge to masturbate and it will be easy to continue for over a year at the least. If you relapse then you have to start over again, meaning you will feel urges as if you just started nofap. So it’s really a matter of hanging in there until you reach the point where urges disappear and the endeavor becomes 10 times easier. \n\n

- Different anon replying, I feel as if a prayer has been fulfilled. I struggle with sexual urges, but three or so days have passed after reading your post and I feel as if they have completely vanished. I still get erections, but I now simply think of them just as biological occurrences. Here is to hoping that this effect lasts for my entire life. \n\n

- Virtually all online content is becoming more and more like p*ornography while p*rn is gradually becoming advertising. Youtube videos, tiktoks, and news features all have the cinematic structure of gonzo p*rn: short or medium form, the goal is to titilate the viewer and draw that feeling out, and there's some dramatic climax which is the moneyshot. Point being, if you want to escape the negative effect this stuff has on your soul, you can't just quit p*rn because now everything is p*rn-like. You have to cut all this other stuff out of your life too and replace it with healthier stuff. Replace the youtube video essays with a book. Don't watch shitty news features. Don't casually surf youtube aimlessly for an hour, watch a movie instead. Limit the amount of tabs you have open. Information dieting. \n\n

Set your hopes high, but don't get depressed with yourself if things are not panning out. Wish you all the best. \n\n >>5 , agreed. There is a browser extension that helps me a lot to minimize aimless YouTube browsing. It's called "Unhook". Wish I could paste the link here, but keep getting marked as spam.
- I also found that spending more time on physical media (books, CDs, DVDs, even Netflix on a television) helps. It's more focused since there are no links to click. All you have in front of you is the thing that you are choosing to partake in. You weren't passively drawn to it in the midst of browsing the internet, and you're not passively listening to it while thinking, "If it's boring, I'll just click on another song." It's a much more conscious way to live and seems to be much healthier. \n\n I think that >>6 is taking things too far. This is the kind of ultimately negative obsessive behavior that I mentioned in my earlier post. Like I said there, it's important not to think too much about what you're doing. \n\n

- Current thoughts
- Right now we are in a time where we have to control our sexuality more than ever. It's currently dangerous to not control it, since we have easy access to p*rnography which can be addictive and destructive. In the near future will be even more dangerous because AI will create stronger, more addictive, and more destructive versions of p*rnography. Not like the past where uncontrolled sexuality would only lead to a major change in quality of life in a minority of people. Back then things were not accessible. It would mean going to a brothel or committing adultery. How many people would do those things? Compare that with the amount of people who would watch p*rnography every day in the privacy of their homes. \n\n
-

- >>8
- There's no use in controlling your sexuality if you don't have a clear roadmap of how it should be correctly disciplined and where it should take you. There's also a danger of falling into some Puritan anti-sex mental hole. The worst thing about p*rn is the way it kinda takes away from real enjoyment and an actually fulfilling sex life. Although really, this should be a rule for the rest of your life in general. \n\n > >How many people would do those things? Compare that with the amount of people who would watch p*rnography every day in the privacy of their homesI still think p*rn can have worse effects. If you go to a brothel, you are having a physical relationship with a flesh and blood person, you are interacting with other humans, building a relationship on mutual exchange. As bad as those things were, you were still forging an intimate relationship with another person. Internet p*rn pulls you out of all of that or perverts your relationships with other humans so you see them through the lens of a p*rnsick mind. \n\n

- Having urges is fine. What's scary is flatlining and having zero libido for weeks at a time. It feels like you'll never have an erection again. At that time it's super hard not to jerk off just to see if your junk still works. Supposedly it comes back to normal eventually, but it can take up to six months and I've never held a streak more than 2 weeks so I don't know. \n\n

If you had zero libido, there would be no sense you are missing out on anything anyway, right? The only pressure would be inter-personal and wider society, neither of which is a problem for me.
- >>14 \n\n > >I would rather have the disconcerting feeling of low libido than have the feeling of being lustful or coomer. In my mind it’s one or the other.Glad others understand that 'moderation' is not viable for some of us. You wouldn't tell a heroin addict to moderate, why don't people see this for other things? They have no concept of 'triggers' and how easy it is to go back to a habit. With former smokers, it's common that they will abstain a long time, but if they take a cig just once, they go from zero to X packs a day like they used to in an instant.
- Why moderate if it's all bad for you anyway? If you're going to put in effort, go all the way than halfway. \n\n

Although, >>15 reads differently for me, so here is another reply. \n\n Practically, losing libido for men means losing testosterone, but even then you seem to keep sexuality at least in most cases, as per this study anyhow - Hormonal status and sexual behaviour of 16 men after surgical castration, 1990 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2141717/ \n\n

- >>15 \n\n > >They have no concept of 'triggers' and how easy it is to go back to a habitThat's true, but I was talking about something else. Even for someone who is distanced from these bad habits, and there's no concern of "falling back into" them, I still don't think there is an easy way to attain moderation. Even masturbating once a week is enough to change the way you see the world. It activates a sexual side of yourself. I would rather not be a lustful person, even though that's probably how most of the population is, as most of the population masturbates. But maybe this idea (of activating lust by masturbating) also only applies to someone who has had exposure to pornography in the past. I don't know. \n\n Personally I've been feeling confused about this topic lately. I hate the feeling of lust and masturbation. I hate the feeling of not being clear minded and completely in control. However I also hate the feeling of trying to repress my lust. In some ways I want to be able to get rid of the lust and be done with it, but masturbation is not the solution, since that will only lead to more later on. It's a real dilemma. Maybe someone has an answer.
- By the way I'm the guy who posted earlier about how libido decreases after being on nofap for a long time. Maybe that is the true solution to my situation. I mean that maybe I need to start a longer streak of nofap again and get back into that mindset. \n\n

I can understanding hording movies and games because they differ widely in quality and you can always rewatch them. Porn is just the same stuff happening over and over again. - Porn addiction is fake and nofap is pushed by perverts with a denial fetish. \n\n Just keep going with your life man, if you want to cut down on jacking off then just do it but honestly it won't improve your life. Try to evaluate why you're jacking off too much, usually people do it because they're depressed or stuck somewhere in life and makes them feel better and that creates the compulsion. When I was young I used to masturbate daily and I just stopped when I got a girlfriend. It's not hard to do it if you actually have a good reason to, and if you don't then who cares. \n\n

- Maybe troll bait but yada yada. I think there's degrees of porn addiction. Like someone could be seriously suffering and unable to detach from it, or completely at the depths of it and be content. \n\n As well, I think someone could have what whatever expert would tell them not to worry about it, not all in this hypothetical example--and completely take it to a level of seriousness that maybe their loved ones and random people online at that see as silly--but to them maybe it's something significant and dire. \n\n I think it's subjective to some degree, like there's the term "compulsive masturbator" but that's not something that's really a thing. There's porn addiction but interpretation here may be not the same for everyone, it may be a harder task for some people than others \n\n
-

- It's classified as a compulsion, and the important thing is that treatments are different because it's a different condition. It's probably ok to call it an addiction colloquially, but all the bullshit you read comparing it to hard drugs and whatever actually makes your chances to stop watching porn much higher. For example, as a compulsion there's no "relapsing", you can jack off once after years of doing nofap and go back to your streak much more easily than a crack addict or a gambling addict. \n\n And the treatment is very easy too, you can just stop watching porn by fixing the problems that are making you do it. If you have a high libido just do it without porn, if you're depressed and are doing it because you need the dopamine then tackling your depression will work better than attacking a symptom. If you're doing it because you're lonely finding friends will help you more. The issue is that these nofap weirdos frame it as a prerequisite to these things, so people will delay treatment because they're "struggling" with quitting porn, in reality it's just some fake obstacle they set themselves. The only thing that porn does to young people is make them waste their time by themselves at the computer, and there's a lot more things that makes people waste their time at the computer. \n\n

Watching prn is definitely more damaging to the psyche than watching movies for example. Prn is frying brains with dopamine + making people feel awkward in normal relationships with women — the time wasting aspect is almost insignificant compared to the other negative effects. This is probably why the “nodal weirdos” you mentioned think they need to get over porn before becoming social — because they realize that prn destroys self confidence. Not that they’re right, but that’s probably what’s going through their minds. I agree with you ultimately about what people should do: get active, talk to people, and do things. Then all the negative effects of prn will go away with time + it will be easy to stop the habit. \n\n

I don't care if nitwits would say this makes me 'less of a man'. I could do with that. I think I have higher test, perhaps a slight thyroid issue due to other symptoms though it's not bad enough to go to the doctors. 'Big balls' is usually a compliment, but the reality is awful. I go to sit in a chair, and whoops, I've sat on my portable beanbag chair, and it fucking HURTS. If they aren't packed in tight tighty whities, my legs will deign to make me a nut sandwhich, OWCH. - It's the 5th for 6th time I've been rebuilding my porn collection this year and slowly I'm disgusted by myself. I know I have agency in life and can fix that issue right now, but the problem is that this whole thing with my motivation will only last a couple of weeks until I succumb to my vices. I think the problem I have is that I'm emotionally attached to the porn I'm collecting, as in: I'm emotionally attached to girls in the pictures I collect, the ecchi/pornographic figures I have in my room are just part of my room and there would be something missing if they wouldn't be where they are, the ecchi porn DVDs I have in my shelf are also part of my room, hence I'm also emotionally attached to these items. It's not part of my identity yet, I could be well off without all that junk, but still, I'm emotionally attached to it. \n\n Perhaps that's the problem, because just deleting my porn folder won't change anything if I still have plenty of pornographic items in my room that I can't just throw away. I don't think they have any value for anyone other than myself, simply due to them being so obscure, yet throwing them away would feel like a waste (and I would feel bad for them, as weird as it sounds). \n\n I heard that you always act perfectly aligned with your morals, but you just can't admit to yourself what those really are. Needless to say that I don't see any issue with porn morally speaking, it's purely a me-problem wherein I consume too much of it and sometimes even too degenerate porn, so that I feel bad after it. All I wish for is for porn to be to a lesser degree part of my life, not consuming everything else, my whole thoughts and actions. Now thinking of it, maybe porn is indirectly part of my identity in the sense that I see imageboard culture and otaku culture as something I like and partake in, which both are at least adjacent to pornography. While I see most comparisons of porn with addictions to substances, alcohol, or gambling as unhelpful, I think one part that makes sense to compare is that it makes no sense to only reduce my porn consumption instead going all cold-turkey since I will relapse that way anyway if I don't stop completely. \n\n
-

- >>40 nice post. Your point about needing to go cold-turkey seems accurate. Also, agreed that otaku culture is somewhat related to porn, but those parts can be ignored. It's possible to appreciate some parts of the culture (and even consider them part of your identity) while avoiding others. If you're posting on imageboards, that will be hard, though, since you'll be exposed frequently to the pornographic or ecchi side of the culture. It doesn't fit well with what you said about going cold-turkey. \n\n I was posting in this thread earlier on in its creation and since then I've changed my opinion a bit. I don't think it's necessary to completely abstain from masturbation. Doing it every occasionally is fine. But this is difficult because the urge to masturbate will usually be very high in the days immediately following masturbation. So there will probably be an unpleasant feeling of struggling to hold off. It might even be more pleasant to do nofap for a week or two at a time, that way the internal struggle is less frequent. Most people would probably just masturbate every day or every two days, but I'd rather not since I feel it negatively impacts my quality of life + makes me more sexual than I would like to be. \n\n Still I think pornography should be avoided. My reasoning for that is the same as my reasoning for why I wouldn't masturbate every day. It makes one more sexual. He becomes prone to seeing women as objects and constantly having a perverted mind. And it negatively impacts quality of life aka makes him feel terrible mentally and physically. \n\n
