  • --- Who asked to spend time with all these people? ---
  • 403 - Name Forbidden (2026-01-26 06:45 ID:byOxgWN/ )
  • Today I realized something about the internet. It's something that I had thought about before, but it never really "clicked" until today:
  • When you spend time on the internet, you are surrounding yourself with a bunch of random people -- random people that you probably wouldn't want to be around in real life. \n\n Imagine being on an airplane. There's one guy watching TV on his iPad without headphones. There's another guy who keeps passing gas. I don't want to spend time with people who are inconsiderate like that. Yet deciding to do something like browse YouTube comments means I'm constantly surrounding myself with these kinds of people, even while I'm at home. \n\n It goes beyond something relatively minor like, "this person lacks self awareness." There are people in real life, and online, who have a completely different set of values than me. There are people who are racist. There are people who are arrogant. \n\n I'm tired of constantly being surrounded (mentally, online) by people I would try to avoid in real life. It's as if their voices get to play in my head whenever I read one of their comments. Overall I think this leads to a lack of peace of mind and being constantly slightly annoyed. \n\n The answer is probably that I should stop using the internet so much and reclaim my personal space. Or at least limit which sites or areas of sites I visit. \n\n

  • Who cares? You're choosing that for yourself and letting it have that effect on you. \n\n Same goes for your airplane analogy. Being bothered by someone farting in public is because of your own weak spirit. \n\n

  • Just because you interact with someone doesn't mean you wholeheartedly like them as a person, even if you do agree with them on some aspects. I may follow Schopenhauers philosophy on life, but it does not mean I follow his view on pushing old ladies down stairwells. \n\n

  • I realized all that not even one week after I started browsing 4chan back in March 2012. \n\n

  • Sometimes I wonder if anyone here (or anywhere on the internet for that matter) is real. With AI now, I can't seem to trust shit anymore. \n\n This place seems comfy at least and I fit in with all the others here, so that's nice. \n\n

  • >>2 and >>3
  • I don't think I was clear enough in my post.
  • It's not that I am extremely picky with who I interact with in every single situation. It's that I would rather not have a stream of other people's negative thoughts and "vibes" flowing into my head, even while I'm home. \n\n

  • People can be dumb and wrong on the internet, and it's not my job to make them stop being dumb and wrong, or even remember that they were dumb and wrong.
  • Let bad opinions become gray noise, water under the bridge.
  • Also, you choose what parts of the internet you engage with, you're not stuck on the airplane.
  • If youtube comments bug you (I mean, fair) then why bother scrolling down after the video? You already know it's not gonna be worth it. \n\n >>5
  • I think the Dead Internet Theory was floating around even before most of this AI stuff.
  • But yeah, it's a good reason to take everything with a grain of salt these days. \n\n
  • 406 - Name Not Acceptable (2026-01-27 01:34 ID:SRbGYXod )
  • > >Let bad opinions become gray noise, water under the bridge. This is sometimes impossible because from time to time you'll encounter comments so ridicously stupid and wrong that they'll forever be burned in your mind. \n\n So the best thing you can do (as you already said) is to try to avoid places where encountering such comments/posts is the norm. \n\n

  • But that's the thing: no matter how stupid and wrong they are, they're still not your problem.
  • And chances are non-zero that they're doing it on purpose just to fuck with people, anyway.
  • And depending on the platform, getting you riled up over how stupid and wrong they are may be the whole business model. \n\n

  • I tried to clarify in >>6, but I still don't feel like the responses are understanding what I'm trying to say... \n\n >>7 \n\n > >Let bad opinions become gray noise, water under the bridge.>>8 \n\n > >from time to time you'll encounter comments so ridicously stupid and wrong that they'll forever be burned in your mind. The background, gray noise itself is the problem. It's like constantly having a bad atmosphere follow you wherever you go, throughout your day, every day of your life.
  • It doesn't need to be exposure to offensive things, even. The overall attitude of people online can sometimes be negative in a more vague way and that shows through the comments they write. \n\n >>7 is right. The solution is to just avoid places where you'll see things you don't like. \n\n

  • I got what you meant, it's still you that's letting those thoughts and vibes lurk in an uncomfortable way in your head. \n\n > >Who asked to spend time with all these people? You did! You're going to the Annoying Idiots Club and getting annoyed that annoying idiots are there \n\n

  • >>9 \n\n > >And chances are non-zero that they're doing it on purpose just to fuck with people, anyway. There's that but more than anything I was talking about pure and genuine display of idiocy.
  • They don't even mean to flame, troll or to rile things up, they're just that damn stupid and it kinda hurts to read such stupidity (and I'm not saying this in a elitistic way). \n\n And yes, the solution is still the same, avoid those ''areas'', but it's still not a perfect solution. \n\n
