• Idaten is a refreshing take on the 'teens with superpowers' formula. Being stronger than the villains and removing them the moment they appear instead of wasting whole arcs fighting them or leaving them to reappear in the future is something I fully welcome! \n\n

• Just watched Porco Rosso with some friends. I'd never seen it before, so I had no idea what to expect, even though I knew it had some rave reviews (like most Ghibli films). It was pretty good all around! The animation was great and the political subtext was nice. That poor pig ;_; \n\n

• As of yesterday, I started watching Yuyushiki. It's a really nice CGDCT type of show, and I like it. However, I'm confused how it's pronounced. In the short breaks in the middle of it, they always say it, but they don't say the i, that comes after the sh ("Yuyushki"). Maybe I'm just overhearing it, but this always confuses me. \n\n

• In 東京弁 (Tokyo dialect) it's pretty common to drop the final vovel of a word so yuyushiki can quickly become yuyushk. As for when it's shki instead of shiki, し (shi) often becomes Sh when there's a hard sound like tsu 質問 or ki　四季 after, but I don't think there's a hard rule for it. \n\n Are you enjoying the show? I just finished all the Non Non Biyori seasons (cute and relaxing rural life show) and started Gakkou Gurashi. \n\n

• Thanks for the explanation. Yes, I really like the show. I'm at 10 out 12 episodes right now and will probably finish the show this evening. In particular the fact that there are virtually no male characters (except for the god of blessing), is weirdly comforting, however as a minor nitpick, I didn't understand the scene where the girls tried to make their teacher cry, it just seemed out out character and unfitting. but maybe \n\n

• I’m about halfway through Kamichu. It’s a sweet little show all but spoilt by poor pacing and one or two bad episodes, like the one where the entire episode is just Yurie lying around in bed. There is a real warmth to the characters and the retro visual aesthetic is pretty. The core message is positive but not hamfisted. \n\n

• Yesterweek I have started watching Clannad. I can't say much about it yet. Nagisa is cute though. • I've been binging older anime lately. Started with Shoujo like Oniisama e (1991)... and Revolutionary Girl Utena (1997). The music was really good in both. Oniisama e... has quite the drama being mostly a sorority girl show, but I found it very engaging emotionally with some pretty fucked up people.
• Someone called Revolutionary Girl Utena "Neon Genesis Evengelion for girls" and I can quite see the resemblance. There's some duelling here and there, but it focuses mainly on human emotions, desires and dark thoughts hidden within, and the duel themselves are rather short and serve mostly as symbolism.
• Currently working my way through a more traditional Shounen called Rurouni Kenshin (1996), I'm not usually a fan of the typical shounen story, but I'm enjoying this one. It's based in the Meiji Restoration era in Japan after the sword carrying ban. \n\n

• Finished Evangelion for a second time. I was a teenager the first time I watched and was unable to understand big chunks of the plot. I could appreciate the animation and the robot fights, but that was it. Now I am completely enamored by it. Greatest anime 10/10.
• Maybe the contrarians over by the Evangelion thread just couldn't grasp or appreciate the more subtle aspects of the show. \n\n

• I've been watching Jigoku Shoujo. It's very formulaic, but I respect its willingness to play with and break the formula occasionally. I like the way it presents ethical dilemmas without necessarily prescribing an answer as well, although I think it's undermined a little by how over-the-top evil many of the characters are. \n\n

• I like that this anime hasn’t been predictable slop and has some moral weight to it, a unique art style, and an attempt to explore deep themes in a way that isn’t trivial and dumbed down with a distinct aesthetic style. Probably the only thing I’m watching this season aside from City. I’ve heard the mangaka behind Takopi is pretty good so I’ll check that out too. \n\n

• I've been rewatching Rozen Maiden. This was one of the first anime I watched, well over a decade ago, so it's very nostalgic. I'm surprised how well it's aged, it's very heartfelt and sincere in a way that you don't see so much these days. I do wish Hina Ichigo's voice wasn't quite so shrill though. \n\n

• I finished Rozen Maiden. I feel like Träumend was a bit tonally dissonant, but it was still fun. I really enjoyed Zurückspulen in particular, I've always liked the idea of doomed alternate timelines. It's a shame it never got a continuation. I also found myself really taken with the character of Megu. It's so rare to see an explicitly depressed and suicidal character, especially when it isn't just a setup for an "it gets better" arc. \n\n
