  • --- someone explain this odd phenomenon? ---

  • So lately I've been seeing critical bombs like Freddy Got Fingered, Repo:genetic opera and yes, even Sponge on the run suddenly get a strange influx of supporters.(Even Biodome in some places? If Mobius gets unironic fans,I will eat my hat.) Is this some strange case of hardcore contrarionism or are some people just built different? Lets discuss! \n\n

  • I'm not sure.
  • A few years ago, maybe 2020, I watched Repo! The Genetic Opera with a friend who suggested it. He's the type of person who likes tacky movies (and kitschy movies, or whatever other word that can be used to describe it.) This person is a unique case; in general he collects all sorts of gaudy antiques and things like that.
  • But I do think that more people are starting to appreciate these things the way my friend does. Take for example the Gen Z's fascination with "aesthetics". They aren't so interested in the content of something but more the overall aesthetic it gives off. My guess is that people are seeking out these low quality movies because of their unique aesthetic (in some cases, I feel like the movie was intentionally going for this cheesy feeling. Repo! definitely felt that way.) \n\n It's similar to "it's so bad, it's good," but I think this is a more complicated than that. People aren't just trying to watch a bad movie to laugh at it. They want to "experience" a certain intangible aesthetic. \n\n (Also, I'm not AI. I know I write like AI...) \n\n

  • Not really related but funny:

  • There's another possibility too.
  • It could be that people like how simple and stupid some of these movies can be. They are movies that don't take themselves too seriously. That can be enjoyable for someone who just wants to lighten up.
  • My reasoning: I realized that I actually like some bad movies "unironically" (if they're comedy. Otherwise, a boring movie is a boring movie.) When I thought about why, the mostly likely option that came to mind was that it's fun to watch something lighthearted, amateur, simple. Also, it's almost "cute" in a way to watch someone make a ridiculous comedy movie, like watching a kid make a bad drawing (I don't think Repo! is that, though). \n\n When you mentioned Freddy Got Fingered, I looked it up and watched a trailer. Looks fun, I'm actually excited to watch it \n\n
